Linnea Markgren is a dynamic and inspiring choral conductor, vocal coach, and performer based in Kings Heath. Originally from Matfors, Sweden, Linnea studied voice at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where she developed her distinctive approach to vocal artistry. She also holds a Master’s degree in Vocal Pedagogy from University of Wales, Trinity St David. Her dissertation work focused on the development of adolescent singers, researching attitudes to singing amongst boys in secondary school, how we develop our vocal identity and the perception of vocal parts within a choir. Her academic and practical vocal expertise makes her especially attuned to the needs of both developing and mature voices, ensuring that her singers grow in confidence, technique, and musicality in a safe and supportive environment.
Besides leading Kings Heath Choirs, Linnea is the Musical Director of the Tarantara Choir in Warwickshire, the King Edward Schools' Choral Society, and the King Edward High School for Girls' Chamber Choir. Previous conducting work includes being assistant director of the evensong choir at St Martin in Bullring and Midlands Hospital choir, leading vocal workshops for Birmingham Opera Company and starting up and leading several school choirs. She also teaches at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, King Edwards School and King Edward VI High School for Girls, where she continues to nurture young talent through a vibrant and inclusive music program.
As a performer, Linnea has toured widely across England, Sweden and Hungary with art song and operatic programmes as well as with the Linnaeus Baroque Ensemble. Choral soloist appearances include Handel's Messiah and Judas Maccabaeus, Palmeri's Misatango, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Bach's Magnificat, Vivaldi's Gloria, Faure's Requiem and Messe Basse, and Orff's Carmina Burana to name a few. She has also sung operatic title roles such as Handel's Semele, Puccini's Sour Angelica and Mozart's Bastienne. However, Linnea enjoys singing, listening to and teaching a wide range of genres, and is also the lead singer of the Jazz ensemble Grandma’s Biscuit Tin.
Linnea brings to her choirs not only a wealth of experience but also a deep passion for empowering young singers. Her leadership is marked by warmth, precision, and a commitment to excellence, making her an exceptional guide for the next generation of vocalists.
